The Mendozas run the market seven days a week. They’ve been married about 17 years, Gonzalo said, and have three children: Jose Miguel, 5 Enrique, 12 and Angel, 16. The Mendozas are from Chihuahua, Mexico, and have lived in Routt County for about eight years. “I think they have something really good going there,” Karen Schulman said. “They have incredible tamales,” Schulman said, adding that her husband, Joel Schulman, is a Los Angeles native who called El Sol’s tamales the best he’s ever eaten. Nineteen-year Steamboat resident Karen Schulman said she was thrilled to see the opening of El Sol, the first market of its kind since Mercadito closed in Dream Island Plaza a few years ago. The store accepts only cash and checks, but Gonzalo said he and Luz are working to get a credit card machine. El Sol also offers shoes, clothing, an array of spices, Mexican candies and more. That business grew into El Sol, the store the couple had long planned. His trips previously supplied the couple’s door-to-door tortilla business, which attracted loyal local customers last fall. “I spend all day long Friday going everywhere over there, with the big warehouses,” Gonzalo said. He leaves every Thursday afternoon, he said, and returns Saturday mornings. The Mendozas are able to accommodate special requests through Gonzalo’s weekly trips to Denver. “It’s not much stuff here, but we have what people are looking for,” Gonzalo said about the growing store. “And Germany,” Gonzalo Mendoza cut in, telling a story about a German woman who came to the market looking for a certain type of food her grandmother used to serve. “We have customers from Peru, Honduras, Nicaragua, Argentina …” Luz Mendoza said. Such items include Chimex brand deli meats San Ignacio “dulce de leche,” or milk candy and tropical fruits. Owners Gonzalo and Luz Mendoza said they’ve already had a warm reception from customers seeking items that can be hard, if not impossible, to find elsewhere in the city. The market has been open for a little more than a month and sells fresh tamales and tortillas along with meats, vegetables and grocery items with a distinct Latin flavor.
